My deliberations all started with the name. I couldn’t just pick anything. It had to be a play on words, and I knew I really had to feel it. (I’m an empath, after all!)
I played soccer my entire life. It’s in this sport that I learned about finesse. My favorite coach, Randy Hilleren, trained my team to play with it. He taught us that finesse was integral to a game well played — that it wasn’t just soccer but rather a delicate dance. He empowered every player to own their position (expertise) on the field, to trust their teammates (co/creators), to be fluid in their footwork (craft) and to see the entire field (bigger picture). Before each game, my team would collectively shout, “Finesse!” before we’d run off, having fun playing with it.
Over the past 15 years, I’ve learned more and more about the importance of having fun with finesse in everyday life and in business — but I’ve also seen firsthand how draining a broken workplace culture can be. And so, that little trip down memory lane brought me back to my search for a name.
I want to have fun with finesse, making the most of my expertise and what I have to offer the world. And because I want everyone to feel involved and invested in the creative process (whether that’s your in-house team, you as a creative coaching client or your own contracted client), I landed on the unique portmanteau that combines fun, finesse and you: funesse.
It’s a name that speaks to my essential nature and to why I decided to start funesse — where the fun’s always intended and finesse is integral to our collective craft.
PS - You might’ve noticed that I refer to what other freelancers and agencies would call clients as partners. This is a conscious choice because I consider you to be an equal, a fellow individual who wants to feel heard and respected — and I want you involved in the creative process.
